Vegetable Plant Locations

Determining the location of your vegetable plants is a very pertinent step to planting your garden, and possibly one of the first steps you want to make. Your location and can be impacted by many factors. If you have a large backyard, you will likely have a pick of many locations for your vegetable plant garden. Those with small backyards can always consider container gardening as well. Container gardening has become very popular, especially for those living in apartments or other locations with limited space.

You will want the location of your vegetable garden to be in a sunny spot. The location should get a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight for maximum growing potential. Certain vegetables do not require quite as much sunlight, including leafy vegetables, like spinach. These vegetables can be planted in a slightly shady area. Research the sunlight conditions of the vegetables you plan on planting when deciding on your vegetable plant location.

Another important factor in determining the location of your vegetable plant garden is ensuring that the garden is not too close to trees or other shrubbery. The roots of the trees in tribes can steal important nutrients from your plants.

You also want a location with fertile soil. If your soil is clay or sandy texture, you may need to add organic matter and fertilizer to your soil. Many local nurseries and test the fertility of your soil if you bring them a sample.

The vegetable plant locations should have proper drainage. Many people choose raised bed gardens for this reason. Ensure there is a water source near your vegetable garden. Depending on the choices you make for planting vegetables, each row or bed should have approximately 12 to 18 inches between them. You at least need enough space to maneuver through out the rows.
