Use Plastic Bird Spikes to Keep Pests Away

Pretty much every home has a pest.  Some people have problems with cockroaches, ants, or centipedes in their house.  Other people have mice scurrying around at night helping themselves to any food they can find.  Still others find that birds are their biggest annoyance.  Although birds naturally stay outside rather than inside the house, they can be just as much of a pest as rodents or insects.

The level of annoyance depends on the type of bird.  People who live in the country often have problems with woodpeckers wreaking havoc on their wooden siding.  People who live in cities frequently have problems with pigeons that seem to never leave their balcony or windowsill.  In fact, pigeons are usually considered the most common pest when you are talking about birds.

Pigeons need to be kicked off your balcony or other spot outside of your home because they are annoying and also dangerous.  Not only does their incessant cooing disturb the peace and drive people crazy when they are trying to sleep, pigeons also have dust that accumulates under their feathers that has been known to cause severe allergies in some people.

The easiest way to get these birds away from your house is to use bird control spikes.  These are long and thin pieces of plastic or stainless steel that have lots of sharp points sticking out of them.  Birds will quickly find it uncomfortable to sit on them, so they will fly away.  Installation is a snap as well, since they are easily glued down to any surface you want in minutes.   This type of bird deterrent works best for small spaces like railings, windows, or chimneys that you can easily cover with spikes.  Larger areas require other measures, since it would be too impractical to install plastic bird spikes over a large surface area.

If you need to get birds away from your entire house altogether, your best bet is probably to get a sonic bird repellent.  These machines play distressed bird calls out of speakers that scare the birds away.  Getting one of these and installing it on your house will work for a larger area than plastic bird control spikes, since it isn’t practical to use too many of them.
