Solar lighting, also called day lighting, is the concept of using the sunlight to light the inside of a home, office or business. The techniques for achieving this are very varied and include window placement, light shelves and skylights. The most familiar of these for many people is the use of skylights, this allows more light into any room, including interior rooms. Modern skylights have been designed to funnel light into a room, which tends to be more efficient than older style skylights, which opened straight up and down and shined light only on a limited area.
Placement of windows determined by the orientation of the house to the rising and setting sun can also ensure maximum light entering the house throughout the day. A lesser-known solar lighting technique is the use of light shelves; a light shelf is reflective shelf built into the window, usually above eye-level, that will reflect sunlight into the ceiling. This allows the light to be dispersed through a large room and reduce glare.
There are many types of outdoor solar light available for purchase. All outdoor solar powered lights operate similarly, they capture and store energy from the rays of the sun during daylight and use this stored energy to power the bulb at night. The most efficient solar lights are going to be dimmer than less efficient lights. These are still very suitable for applications like lining your driveway or walkway. Bright solar spotlights can use the energy captured from the sun very efficiently when they are connected to a timer or motion detector. This allows the light to run only when needed rather than using up all stored energy and going out, often before dawn.
