Shopping for window valances should be fun not frustrating. It can be a bit overwhelming what with the multitude of options that are available but when you know what to look for it will make it much easier.

It is important to start by setting a budget. For example, valances for bay windows, especially when used with other window treatments, can start to get surprisingly pricey once you get up into more expensive materials and brands. By determining a budget beforehand you will have a price to stick to and know what you can spend. This will narrow down the selection right from the get go and make sure you are only considering bay window valances that you can afford.

Color is another issue of major importance. The color of your valances will make all the difference in the world and you want them to be well suited for the room you will be using them. One tip is to choose a color for your window curtain valances that is just a hue or two above the wall shade. This offers a more neutral casual look. If you are going for a more dramatic look you may want to go the opposite way and get valances in a contrasting color.

Also think of what size valance you would prefer. You may choose one that simply hangs from the curtain rod straight across or one that drapes down the sides and onto the floor, creating a more elegant and romantic space.

There should be a flow in the room and starting with the valances work your way down to the drapes and throughout the rest of the room. Often people will buy bay window valances in a set with window drapes but this is not something you have to do. To get more of a unique look it is worth it to buy the pieces separately and get your window treatment looking just how you want it.

Consider the proportion and scale of your valances to the drapes. Together they should work well in the space and not be too subtle or overpowering.

If you are really eager you can always get out the sketchpad and start drawing some designs up yourself. Then you can head into your local home décor or specialty window treatment store and let them make customized window treatments for you.

It seems as though there are so many things to consider when valances for windows are being planned out, but once you get a bit more practice you will start to get the hang of it and actually enjoy the experience.
