Making a Roman shade is one of the most popular craft projects that people want to create but are afraid it will be too hard. Making roman blinds are cheaper than buying one and getting it install correctly. Most Roman shades can be made depending on the choice of hardware and material around $20 to $40 dollars. Making a Roman shade can be easier if you begin planning your project with these five parts: decide how to mount your shade, measuring your window, determining the folds of the shade, the construction of the blind, and the mounting of the Roman shade.

Decide How to Mount Your Shade

The first thing you need to determine is what mount style you are going to use; there are three methods: inside mount, outside mount, and Hybrical mount. A mounting board that is 3/4 depth will be used to mount your shade that is screwed into the window trim or wall, depending on what mounting option you used. The recommended mounting board is a 1 x 2 pine board with a 3/4 depth. You will need to decide of it will be a “flat” mount against the wall or a “projected” mount against the trim. Hybrid can be mounted either way.

How to Measure Your Window

If you are considering the inside mounted shade, you will need to measure the width and length of the inside of the window. Then measure the depth of the inside of the window frame; this needs to be at least ¾” so that the mounting board will fit.

If you are considering the outside mounted shade you need to add add 4” to the width and 6” to the length. This is required since it is nailed to the wall.

The correct measurement will make sure that your shade fits the window.

Determining the Folds

Lay out the material and cut the width of the shade plus 2” for the width and 8” in length. Attach the lining to the material allowing a ¾” seam.

The folds are important part of the body of the shade. You want to have the fold measured out to have at least four fold. Take the length of the shade and measure a 2” line for the top of the shade, then create four fold lines that are 8” to 12” for flaps and then a remaining 4” to 6” for the bottom of the shade.

To get the folds to not bunch up you need to create pocket that will be attached to the fold lines. Take the material a cut strips of 3” sew seams with a 3/4 measurement, then attack to the fold line. Slide dowels of battens into the pockets. Now, you need to sew on the rings. Lay the shade out flat and position the head rail so that the front of the board is facing down with the pulleys toward the bottom of the shade. Mark the location and baste them on.

Mount the Roman Shade

Take the mounting hardware and attach to the instruction that comes with the mounting hardware.
So, making roman blinds is not the easiest process, but it is worth the time to create a masterpiece that is designed personally.
