Lighting With the Gooseneck Floor Lamp

It is important that your general living areas, especially rooms where your family spends a lot of its time, are well lit.  If you are not a great fan of bright overhead lights, you may find that you can improve your lighting simply by buying additional floor or table lamps.  The gooseneck floor lamp is great to add to a living room, as it is so versatile and can be used for many different purposes.

If you just want to add extra lighting to an area, or if you want to highlight a beautiful painting on the wall, simply shine your gooseneck floor lamp on the object. If you need better lighting while you read, or work on a hobby, you can move a gooseneck floor lamp behind the chair or sofa you are sitting on, and have the light shine over either your right or left shoulder. This is the best position when you are reading, with the solid light coming from behind.

Most of these type of lamps are also deliberately made so that they are fairly easy to move around. That is great if you are the sort of person who does not have a favourite reading chair, for example, but you like to move to different locations in your home. Their portability means that they can just as easily be moved to where the children are working on their homework, or another project.  Best of all, you can swivel the shade so that the bulb illuminates whatever you want it to.

You can buy cheap gooseneck floor lamps, although I would not necessarily recommend you do so.  Sometimes, some of the cheaper versions are quite flimsily made, and that can be dangerous as they have been known to tip over when bumped. The base needs to be sturdy and have enough weight to prevent the lamp from tipping over with just a little bump. While you can find some for as little as $30, I would recommend that you look at lamps priced around $75 and up in order to get something that looks great, and is sturdy and well made. Of course, it is possible to find very good specials at times too, especially online.

Designer lamps naturally look great, but they also cost quite a bit more.  When deciding on what you will buy you will need to take into consideration the purpose of the lamp, is it decoration only, will it be moved around a lot and get a lot of use?  How sturdy is it and how much are you willing to pay?  If you buy your gooseneck floor lamp online, pay particular attention to the specifications give, and to any customer reviews of the specific lamp you are looking at.
