Rim locks add an accent of history and elegance to your door. When people think of this type of lock, they think of a brass rim lock or a Victorian rim lock. While most rim locks are antique designed, recently they have been made in styles that are more contemporary. These locks add flair, however they are not very secure and should really only be used on interior doors or supplemented by an additional deadbolt. In addition, they are one of the easiest types of locks to install. Here are some instructions on how to add a rim lock on your own.

The tools that you will need are a lock set, a chisel, a drill, screws and nails and a pencil. First, remove the existing lock and measure where the spindle and keyhole are located. Mark where the positions of these measurements on the door. Then, drill a hole in the door for the spindle, which should be big enough so it can spin freely. Then use your drill and chisel to create a keyhole. Drill two holes, one on the top and bottom, and use the chisel to remove any wood left between the holes.

On the front of the door, install the body of the lock. Use your screws and nails to secure the body in place. The next step is to install the keeper. This is also known as the strike plate, which is a devise that holds the latch in place. Install this on the part that faces the doorframe. Then attach the doorknobs on either side, connecting through the spindle. They should either snap together or have a hole to use a screw to connect. The last step is to attach the rosette on the inside face, which can be done by screwing it in.

While these types of locks will not bring the most security, it will definitely add style and elegance to your home.
