Leather armchairs have been a favorite piece of furniture for many years. Since Victorian times men have enjoyed a cigar, a glass of port and the company of their friends while lounging in their favorite leather armchair at their club. Think of the television show, Masterpiece Theatre; Alastair Cook came to us each week from the confines of a leather armchair. It has become an iconic symbol of luxury in our culture. Today leather armchairs come in many different shapes and colors. Modern leather arm chairs are sleeker and more casual then their old fashioned cousins.
Leather is a durable material but it does require some care. If exposed to sunlight for long durations, it will fade and crack. To keep your leather furniture looking its best you need to keep it clean and well conditioned. There are products available that are formulated specifically for the cleaning and conditioning of leather. The manufacturer may have recommendations on the correct care of your armchair, it is best to check the owner’s manual since some chairs are treated with chemicals to retard stains and moisture. You should test the products that you plan on using on an inconspicuous part of the armchair. A soft-gum art eraser can be used to remove small stains. If your leather chair is water resistant, you can use a mixture of detergent and water on a damp cloth to clean it. Use another damp cloth to rinse the area and then buff the area to a shine with another soft cotton cloth. If it is not water resistant, then you may have to use the eraser to clean the entire chair. Keep your leather armchair dusted and vacuum it periodically to remove any dirt and debris. If you care for your armchair properly you will be able to enjoy its comfort for many years.
