Keeping and maintaining a worm farm can be a fun way to save the environment one step at a time starting at home. There are some frequent questions that arise from new worm farmers, though. These are just a few.
How do you prevent ants from being attracted to your wormery?
If the environment inside of your worm bin is too dry or too acidic, ants may very well invade. Make sure to keep your bin moist as well as to avoid adding too much citrus or other types of acidic foods to the bin. If the bin does get too acidic, you can add some simple garden lime to bring the pH level back up to be more conducive to the worms. Keeping the bin slightly off the level of the floor or cabinet bottom will also deter ants from crawling up inside the worm farm.
Why am I getting maggots inside of my worm farm?
Maggots can only become a serious problem in the wormery if you are trying to compost meat. Leftover meat scraps should never be added to your bin as they will have a tendency to go rancid and attract flies. Once the flies lay their eggs, you will have maggots in the worm bin. To get rid of the maggots once you have them, take some bread, soak it in milk, and lay the pieces on top of the bedding. The maggots should be attracted to the bread, and then after a few days you can simply toss out the maggot-ridden bread pieces.
Most common problems with a home wormery are easily avoided if you educate yourself. Maintaining the proper environment for worms to thrive is not very difficult. This simplicity and elegance can help your household cut down on waste sent to a landfill by over forty percent per year. In return you get a wonderful worm compost that your garden will love. In the end it’s not a bad trade-off.
