The deck design software available today is a far cry from what was on the market just a few years ago. It used to be that the typical program had a few pre-designed decks for you to choose from, and that was about all. While those programs are still available, the typical deck design program now offers a much deeper interface and a true design capability. Prices range from around $10 up to around $100 for the more elaborate programs.

In the low end of the price range you can find several decent programs that will provide a few canned deck plans, and usually will also let you do some minor manipulation of the plan to suit your particular home’s layout. There is not much provided beyond those features, and if you want to get into supply lists and estimations of man hours, you will need to consider one of the better programs.

The good news is that the programs in the higher end of the price range offer everything you could ever want when it comes to designing a deck. You can design your deck from the ground up instead of having to manipulate a plan that came with the program. if you are trying to design something that is not structurally sound, the program will alert you and give you help in getting back on the right path.

One of the coolest features of all in the better programs is your ability to choose items from a list that you can virtually place in your deck design in order to see if the deck you are envisioning will truly accommodate your needs. You might find that you don’t need as large a deck as you thought, or you might find you need to think bigger in order to get the functionality you want. You will probably only do this once, so you might as well do it right the first time!

When you have your plan developed, you can print out a complete list of supplies and associated costs, as well as an estimate of how much labor time will be needed in order to complete the job. This information is invaluable when dealing with contractors and negotiating prices. The $100 spent on a program like this can repay itself back many times over if you take advantage of all the features these programs offer.
