Doorbells are found in many homes. A doorbell is a device that signals the arrival of a guest or a family member who forgot his or her keys. Emitting a ringing sound, it alerts a house’s or an apartment’s occupants of a visitor’s presence in the premises. Many door bells are controlled by an electric switch; this type of doorbell was invented in 1831 by a man named Joseph Henry.
Its history is something that many of us neglect to find out. Doorbells started as a by-product of people knocking on the door to announce their arrival in a friend’s home. After that, door knockers came into life and were attached to doors so the knocker will not have to use his or her knuckles to bang on the door. If your knock is not that loud, your host may not even hear it causing many-a-visitors to stay outside for a long time. If it is raining or snowing or if it is too hot outside, visitors had to bear that just to wait for their host to hear their knock finally.
Door knockers made it easier for every visitor to knock on their friend’s doors and made it easier for their hosts to hear them. Later on, other forms of the door knocker came into existence such as doorbells that are actually bells with a string attached to them. Visitors had to pull the string to ring the person inside the house. This method however was still insufficient and if the host is in the inner parts of the house, these types of doorbells did not reach a sound range for all the people in the household to hear.
As history has it, with the advent of electricity -electric doorbells later on came into existence with the efforts of inventor Joseph Henry. With electricity, doorbells were able to give better sound quality for all people in the household to hear that someone is at the door even if they are in the most remote places in their house.
Starting in the 1900s, electronic doorbells changed from a buzzer to numerous musical door chimes. At the time, it became so popular that electronic doorbells were a must-have. After 1965 however, the amazement of these doorbells wore off and manufacturers of doorbells stopped operations.
After ten years, doorbells became popular again sparked by wireless doorbells along with other sound advancements. Today, doorbells are sold online at an astounding rate. In fact, it is now listed as a hot item since there are now different sounds and chimes ranging from new songs to popular old songs and other favorites. Some doorbells even give you the option to put the song you want in CD format.
With this resurgence of doorbells, there are now doorbells with design features that were not there before. There are even waterproof doorbells available and waterproof bell receivers that will notify the owner of the house that someone is at the door wherever room the home owner is.
Today, doorbells have extended their reach in terms of technology because there are now audio intercoms and even video intercom systems that help in the overall functionality of a home.
