Decorating your home with chests and trunks is an unusual, yet delightful way to make your house look great. They can add an antique and lived in look if you use something a little more aged, or you can add a more nature oriented look with wicker furniture. Here’s some advice on how to use chests and trunks to your advantage.
- Make sure they fit into the design of the room well. A trunk that clashes will make people think you’re planning on leaving for a trip. You will want to make sure they fit the overall design aesthetic of the room. This may mean match the colors of the room with the trunk, or perhaps the travel theme can be woven in somehow – pictures of a trip you took would clue people in on your intention.
-Realize that the trunks will draw eyes. They aren’t going to blend into the background easily. Expect people to look at them – probably even closely – and plan accordingly. For example, I have a wicker storage trunk in my living room that, upon closer inspection, is holding winter blankets. It’s a cold theme that matches the natural look of the wicker.
-Don’t be afraid to use the chests for their real purpose either. One of the most valuable reasons to use these in a room is that you can actually keep things inside them! Like in the example above, wicker chests were made to hold things, so put things in them! Keep extra couch pillows in them, or blankets for guests, or children’s toys, or anything else you could possibly want to hide away.
Chests and trunks are useful, but they can be beautiful too. By using them as a design element you’re killing two birds with one stone, and making your design a little more creative, and home-like.
