There are many different ways to decorate your home and choosing the right light shades for your lighting fixtures will help being any room together. Coming in an endless variety of styles and colors, light shades not only add style but function to your rooms, as the right lighting is necessary for kitchens, bedrooms, and living and dining rooms in order to be functional. Both retail and online stores offer a wide variety of modern and contemporary light shades, while small local lighting stores often offer lighting and light shades for a more antique feel to your home.

Light shades are typically utilized for table, reading, and accent lamps that add flair and function to your home. Light shades come in two forms: fabric and glass and there is no shortage of styles for you to choose from. Glass light shades come in stained glass, opal, iridescent, satin crystal, etched, and sandblasted. Glass light shades can be more expensive than fabric light shades because they are fragile and often antique. The Tiffany Company produced countless antique glass light shades in some of the most memorable designs. Original Tiffany stained glass lamps can often fetch up to $500,000 at auction and are a popular collectors item. Glass light shades can be found in any lighting and home store and antique stores typically offer styles that you will not find in contemporary and modern lighting stores. Antique light shades are significantly more expensive but they are a must have for antique homes.

Fabric light shades may come in paper, burlap, silk, leather, velvet, or mica and they are often less expensive than glass. Many antique fabric light shades were ornamented with lace and fringes. There are, however, many carefully handmade shades that can often match or outdo the price of glass. Fabric shades come in countless styles, colors, and sizes and their durability makes them more functional than fragile glass light shades. While some fabric light shades are standard on less expensive lamps, many fabric shades are handmade antiques and are not only expensive but they are also collectibles. Fabric shades are often hand-woven, embroidered, or painted, making them a unique addition to any room. While not as fragile as glass, antique fabric light shades are less durable than contemporary shades and may be irreplaceable if damaged.

Choosing the right light shade for your lamps is a matter of taste and should match the style of your home. From antique, to contemporary, to modern, there are dozens of styles to choose from that will compliment the décor of your home. Antique homes benefit most from antique shades, including Victorian fabric shades to Tiffany-style glass and stained glass shades. While most lighting, home, and furniture stores will offer a large variety of lamps and shades to accompany them, it is wise to visit small local lighting stores if you are looking for something classical to fit the antique feel of your home.

It is important that your general living areas, especially rooms where your family spends a lot of its time, are well lit. If you are not a great fan of bright overhead lights, you may find that you can improve your lighting simply by buying additional floor or table lamps. The gooseneck floor lamp is great to add to a living room, as it is so versatile and can be used for many different purposes.

If you just want to add extra lighting to an area, or if you want to highlight a beautiful painting on the wall, simply shine your gooseneck floor lamp on the object. If you need better lighting while you read, or work on a hobby, you can move a gooseneck floor lamp behind the chair or sofa you are sitting on, and have the light shine over either your right or left shoulder. This is the best position when you are reading, with the solid light coming from behind.

Most of these type of lamps are also deliberately made so that they are fairly easy to move around. That is great if you are the sort of person who does not have a favourite reading chair, for example, but you like to move to different locations in your home. Their portability means that they can just as easily be moved to where the children are working on their homework, or another project. Best of all, you can swivel the shade so that the bulb illuminates whatever you want it to.

You can buy cheap gooseneck floor lamps, although I would not necessarily recommend you do so. Sometimes, some of the cheaper versions are quite flimsily made, and that can be dangerous as they have been known to tip over when bumped. The base needs to be sturdy and have enough weight to prevent the lamp from tipping over with just a little bump. While you can find some for as little as $30, I would recommend that you look at lamps priced around $75 and up in order to get something that looks great, and is sturdy and well made. Of course, it is possible to find very good specials at times too, especially online.

Designer lamps naturally look great, but they also cost quite a bit more. When deciding on what you will buy you will need to take into consideration the purpose of the lamp, is it decoration only, will it be moved around a lot and get a lot of use? How sturdy is it and how much are you willing to pay? If you buy your gooseneck floor lamp online, pay particular attention to the specifications give, and to any customer reviews of the specific lamp you are looking at.

If you are an avid reader, then you know that you need proper lighting. If you sit in your comfy chair for hours on end reading, you need to have a floor reading lamp that is bright and clear.

Several suggestions for floor lamps would include the very popular Tiffany style floor lamps. Their colors are amazing and they are an excellent choice for decorating your home. Put one next to your sofa, get comfy and read a book or two.

An option that you may not have thought about may be a gooseneck floor lamp. The gooseneck part of the lamp, part of the long lamp base, is flexible and you can bend them to adjust to any situation. If you are a shorter person, you may have to bend the gooseneck a little more than a taller person would have bend it. These are great floor lamps for any family member to use.

Another particularly popular type of floor lamp that can be used for reading is the Arco lamp. This lamp features an arching profile that allows the base of the lamp to be positioned out of the way in a corner while the light is still able to be used just about anywhere in the room. This is perfect for anyone needing the task lighting required for reading.

When you shop for a floor lamp, make sure to find out how many light bulbs you can use and what the maximum wattage is for the lamp. If a floor lamp only holds one sixty watt bulb, it my not be adequate to read by lamp. That type of floor lamp may be better off used for mood lighting, not reading.

If you have gold tone lamps in your living room, make sure to try to match the gold color when shopping for a new reading lamp. Also, a floor lamp with a clear shade will give more light than a dark colored shade.

Have fun with lamps, add some interest and charm to your home with a pole lamp, a high intensity lamp or gooseneck floor lamp.

1985 is the year when the first handmade Tiffany lamp was created by an anonymous skilled man, and not by Louis Comfort Tiffany, who was thought, for over a century, to be the designer of these artfully realized lamps. Tiffany’s first important project was his design for the interior of a firm in New York, for which he created stained-glass windows.

Tiffany’s lamps can be classified in seven distinct categories : Flowered Globe lamps, Flowered Cone, Transition to Flowers (which are the most popular of his works nowadays), Geometric, Favrile and Irregular Upper and Lower Border, which represent his older working style.

They are prepared by using the Copper Foil method and they work great for season-themed room designs and even feng shui arrangements. Tiffany lamps come in many forms – wall lamps, pendant lamps, floor lamps, table lamps, so you they give you the advantage to follow the same style if you want to place different types of lights in the same room, wall lights and hanging lights as well, or table lamps and floor lamps together. There is no risk of disturbing the ambient of the room you want to decorate.

Besides the above mentioned properties and the extraordinary beauty of Tiffany lamps, they’re also known for their long life and reasonable price, even if the creation of a Tiffany lamp requires a lot of labor. Hand painted Tiffany lamps are jewlery to their owners. And it doesn’t matter if you are more of a trendy and modern personality or you’re a nostalgic for the past times, if you’re simple and playful or always elegant and stylish, classical or sophisticated, Tiffany style has it all.

Chandeliers belonging to the style are great to place above the dinning table, offering you a nice environment to dine in with your family members or friends.

Now it’s possible that the following questions come to your mind : Aren’t Tiffany lamps hard to maintain? Aren’t they hard to restore? Keep your mind quiet because there’s nothing to worry about, as there are many firms that offer their services for that purpose. That’s not a strong reason to make you refuse the pleasure of owning the finest Tiffany studio pieces or the so famous Tiffany studio desk pieces that everyone would want to have in their homes. You can accentuate the style by adding Tiffany vases and glass to your rooms.

If you are fond of a certain colored light, you can increase the effect by choosing a Tiffany lamp with the glass painted in different nuances of the color you like. That could be a ”very green”, ”truly magenta”, ”deep purple” light, creating dramatic effects on your design.

If you are a craftsman, you could do it yourself; it isn’t that hard, inspite of the complicated and sophisticated models that you usually see on Tiffany glass. Good luck!

Who would go for something like that in order to illuminate…anything? Not too many people, right?

After viewing this picture, some of you changed opinion for sure. This is what we understand by the term “oil lamp” today; colored flame lamps are really special for any ambient that you wish to create. You’re having a house party this weekend? Embellishing your garden with colored flame torches or oil lamps could be that one high inspiration that you need to make your event outstanding, as an unique and unforgettable result.

Do you want to impress your significant other with a special romantic dinner? These paraffin oils burn with very little smoke residue. The light is intense and bright and perfect for any occasion. Unlike in the earlier mentioned case of colored flame lamps, in this case the oils are colored and not the flames, but the results are somewhat similar. You can purchase these kind of lights at “More than light” physical or online stores.

Who would’ve thought of this when hearing “oil lamp”? See what awesome effects they can create, the only “flaw” about fire is that it burns. That’s another way of saying that you need to be careful if you choose to decorate your homes with oil lamps because they have the inconvenient of not being safe, especially if there are kids around.

But more than for designing purposes, oil lamps are used nowadays for…home shrines.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a christian or a buddhist, if you are jewish or muslim, we all light a light to the same God, and these modern oil lamps are specially designed for your own home shrine, for the place where you want to speak or just listen to God. Make that place a very desirable one, maybe it will instigate you to pray more, with the time.

This is a designer old lamp (aka “A Cordless Moment oil lamp”, by Thomas Bernstrand) that you can purchase for $169. Is it expensive, is it cheap? It’s not really outstanding, but I would want to have it in my home for the safe design and discreet “twist”. It blends with the environment almost totally. Great job, Bernstrand!

Even the swiss kerosen light that you see in the picture above can look awesome if it’s combined with the right design elements. One thing is clear, that oil lamps are not dead yet. They’re still used by people who are fond of God or romantic designs; or maybe they’re simply nostalgic about the past times. Either way, designers do a favor to those who like to illuminate their interiors with this type of lights, turning oil lamps into safer items while providing them with modern looks, worthy of your money. They still have numerous “fans” among designers and clients, so they might still get to live a longer life than that of my whole generation, if I start counting the years from now. These lamps are capable of “living” a very long life though, and they have a long history behind also. They’re still a great illumination option, as long as you make sure they’re safe for the environment and for your family members.

Etymologically, the word “lamp” is derived from the Greek word “lampas”, that means torch. Oil lamps are a quite early presence in the history of lamps.

After the invention of the central burner in the 18th century, which represented, at the time, an important improvement in lamp design (the central burner is provided with metal fuel source enclosure) , little glass chimneys were attached to lamps so that the flame was protected and the flow of air to the flame was controlled.

At the beginning of the 4th century, people were hanging oil lamps on their walls to illuminate interiors and make the space easier to navigate though at night. Here is a picture of a glass oil lamp dated 4th century; the oil lamp belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These types of lamps were used in the Roman Empire and Sidon (Lebanon).

At about the same time, people put some more emphasis on the design of their light sources in Syria and Byzantium, and this is how an oil lamp from that period looks like:

It’s made of metal and you can also notice the head of a horse as a part of its design. It is crystal clear that this lamp wasn’t manufactured just for the purpose of its function; even back then, people felt the need to surround themselves with beautiful objects and exercise their creative skills, bringing their imagination down to earth.

Later on, in the Byzantium of the 5th-6th centuries, people developed their skills for the realization of more refined items, enlarging the range of the materials they’d use for their pieces of art.

This is a brass-hanging lamp with a griffin-head handle; it currently belongs to the British Museum. The main part of the lamp has the shape of a boat and it’s provided with a filling hole for the oil in the centre and a wick hole at the end. Numerous similar lamps have been found throughout the Mediterranean.

The next image illustrates a glass oil lamp from the 8th (9th?) century.

But glass didn’t prove to be the best material for oil lamps back in the time, so people thought of replacing it with more lasting materials. The first terracotta oil lamps were created, and here’s a picture of what they looked like:

This specific lamp the Arab-Norman type of oil lamp, and it belongs to the Provincial Museum of Archeology of Salerno, Italy.

And from that…

…to this oil lamp, that looks more like a bronze statue. But it is an oil lamp indeed, realized by Barthélémy Prieur, around 1600.

From Renaissance to our days, oil lamps have been given various shapes and sizes, lots of different materials and styles, so that today designers have this long history available for their inspiration; the new and the ancient, the fresh and the forgotten have always created together a special touch of something outstanding and inovative. Today’s craftsmen are ready to create funny, stylish, fashionable, even contemporary oil lamps (now, thats really odd, isn’t it?). The bad part about them is that they’re not so safe. The best part is that they turn electric

Lights are undoubtedly influencial when it comes to our mood and state of mind, especially if they are coloured. They come in a wide range of designs and styles, from the antique, old, vintage style to contemporary modern. Regardless of your personality, you got 100% chances to find a lovely designer one at IKEA, Fontana Arte, Foscarini or Fabbian. What do you think about when choosing a lamp for your room?

In the first place, it has to suit the room arrangement, you might have an idea about the model you want to buy, you might want it to adjust from bright light to nightlight, maybe you’d like it to have colored light that would add dramatism to your room’s design theme.

Well lamps are ideal for any kind of room or office as long as there’s enough free space on the walls. You can use them to highlight certain spots of your house at night, you can use them in your office, (the ones that imitate paintings, maybe you should them out cause they look amazing), or you can place them above or beside the artworks that you own, so you bring them into the spotlight. Either way, they look great.

But what about…therapy? Could your wall lamps save you from depression? Recent studies have proven that possible. There is something called “light(s) therapy” that you have probably heard of, and the reason why I’m mentioning it, speaking of wall lights, is that fluorescent light – which is a common property of wall lights, as compared to pendant ones and ceiling lights – has a great influence of one’s state of mind.

It’s said that a globe like this ( Lights of America ) can make miracles. Very bright lamps (or dichroic lamps), fluorescent ones, full-spectrum lights, light-emitting diodes can represent your treatment for acne vulgaris and neonatal jaundice, when directed at skin, circadian rhythm disorders, insomnia, delayed sleep phase syndrome, when the light strikes the retina of the eyes. Light therapy is also used to treat seasonal affective disorder.

Now that you know what a light can do and have an idea about what you want it to look like, it’s time to think of possible illnesses that might cause you pain. Visit an expert in light therapy once, and then adjust your wall lamps to do you a favour, besides being there, being pretty and helping you to navigate easily throughout your home, in lack of natural light.

“Halogen Atom”, “Stars”, “Metal Lemon”, “Sol” (in English, “sun”), “Grapevines” are a few names of modern models of hanging lights. Metal and light have revolutionized sculptures, bringing again into the spotlight the appreciation of crafts and creativity in a domain which was normally associated with marble and stone. The arts have taken over our existence, we cannot separate our lives from arts. From the way we move and talk to the incredible designs of the newest cars, from the sounds we hear every day to the ultimate architectural projects, from the food we eat and the clothes we wear..to the hanging lights we have in your homes, everything’s got a tendency towards “the beautiful”, towards arts.

But we don’t always like to buy everything, right? Especially when it comes to things that can be easily made with our own hands. That means we play and realize objects that turn out to be pretty loyal copies of what we initially imagined. That saves us money as well. If you’re among the “how to do it yourself” guys, who love the reward of being surrounded by their imagined objects, by their own creative energy, then maybe you might be interested in a few ideas about how to obtain a contemporary hanging light, beautiful, cheap, and truly yours.

The first suggestion is to use a porcelain doll for the main part of the lamp. You remove the doll’s head, because you are supposed to place a bulb instead of it. You can paint the doll’s body using spray and there are lots of fun models to think about. Here’s a picture of what the final product could look like.

However, our purpose is to make it a hanging lamp. All you need to do is to adjust it with a thin line – make it as “invisible” as you can – and place it in your home. A friend of mine used this idea, and she choose to hang it in the corner of her room, above the desk. Her desk is always full of folders and papers and she thought of something that’d help her save some space. This floating doll suits her room and her personality. If you’re not very enthusiastic about floating dolls, you can replace the main part of the lamp with another object that you like better than dolls ?

Another idea, same modern and definitely not expensive, is to use an old washing machine barrel. All you need to do in order to realize a modern hanging lamp out of this old washing machine barrel is to purchase a bronze or silver spray, because you need fresh hues for your hanging light, and place it in your room. Here is a picture of what you might get.

The last suggestion in this article is the realization of an outdoor hanging light. You will need some skills for this one, but if you’re creative enough, you can replace the complicate models with less complicate ones, such as circles of different sizes, squares, maybe the sillhouette of a child. However, the main material you need to use is wood (very cheap too). You may like to combine it with some glass, but that’s optional.

So, you will make 4 wooden facets of a box, because that’s your final product’s shape. You will first cut them to obtain your favourite model, make a nice finish to it (you can also paint it), add a bulb to your wooden box, and a wire, then hang it in your garden. It could look like this :

When we think of a lamp shade, we think of the typical standard and sometimes dull white. Of course, the main purpose of every type of lamp shade is to let the light shine through and brighten up our environment. But in order to appeal to the most people and fit in with most types of decor, many lamp shades end up being rather bland. This is so that people don’t need to worry if the color of the shade fits in with the color scheme of a particular room, because the standard light colored shades seem to blend in with pretty much any household decor. However, some people feel that the lighter colored lamp shades produce a harsh light and can be too bright. So one way you can tone the light down is with a lower wattage bulb, which will help.

Lamp shades can be purchased everywhere. You can find custom lampshades in every color of the rainbow and then some. You can really let your imagination run wild with a custom lamp shade, and make a really boring room come alive! Depending on where you buy them, custom shades generally don’t come cheap, but many people see them as a worthwhile investment. After all, how often do you change a lampshade?

If you have a particular theme with your interior decor, the right lampshade can really make a statement. For example, if your decor has a western theme, there are some really cool rawhide lamp shades that can blend in and complement the overall look and feel of the room. Another example might be a child’s room that is decorated in an animal theme. You can get some lamp shades that have animals on them, to blend in and really make a room cute.

If however you are an arts & crafts type person and don’t want to spend the money on a custom shade, you can take one of your old white boring lampshades and glue some cutouts on it. This is explained in detail at the website Recycle Delight. If you visit a craft store, you will be surprised what is available and what you can use for this purpose. Just let your imagination run wild!

We don’t often think of how our lamp shades will fit in when we are decorating. But as you can see, a special one that fits your decor can really make a statement. Whether it’s just a color or dressed up accordingly. Try it! you will be surprised as to the difference it will make!

Lighting can be a difficult task at times and finding the proper country ceramic table lamps can be hard as well, but there are lots of other options too. Having lamps inside the home is a great way to set the mood and they are great for any decoration addition too.

A ceramic table lamp comes in many shapes and sizes and tons of different brands as well. You can get very short styled lamps or long and tall ones too. You need to know a estimate of the size you need and the area that you want this to be in as well.

You can place ceramic base table lamps in any area of the home and you need to decide first on the areas that you want this to be in. You need to first decide on the areas that need more lighting first so that you buy enough lamps for your home.

Also, if you really like these, they come in a variety of colors too. I’ve seen some in blue, green, red, white, and many other colors to fit any home decor style. Also, they are some with variety of patterns and odd shapes as well. One type you should look at are the modern or contemporary styles which are more of the new age style of today.

Once you have chosen the frame of the lamp, you also have to remember that you need to find a lamp shade as well. A lamp shade can make or break the style of the lamp so pay attention to details and find something that has creative styles and something that is unique.

If you looking for places to find antique ceramic table lamps or a new one, then one solution would be to find products online that supply these types of lighting for your home. Prices ranges vary, but they can be as low as 20 dollars and up to a few hundred depending on the model, type, and brand, but if you look around you can find some really great deals these days.
