Mold and mildew can be every homeowner’s worst enemy. They are not only often difficult to remove completely, they can also be unhealthy, causing various temporary or long term problems such as breathing difficulties, sore throat and headaches.

The best method of mold and mildew removal depends largely on which surface it is on. Mildew that is present on grouting, tile or concrete can be effectively removed by cleaning thoroughly with a mixture of eight parts water and one part bleach. Mildew often forms on shower curtains and an effective way to remove it is to soak the curtain in a mixture of diluted bleach and dish washing soap.

One of the worst places to find mildew is under your carpet and mildew removal in this scenario can be expensive as you will have to dispose of both the carpet and the padding. The sub floor can then be scrubbed thoroughly with a small amount of bleach mixed in water and left to dry before attempting to replace the carpet or padding. It is also impossible to completely remove mold from porous surfaces, such as drywall or sheetrock; the only solution is to replace the affected area.

Mildew removal from wood is essential as soon as you see any signs of it, as left untreated it is not only unsightly but can damage wood to the point of instability. Any affected area should be washed with a mixture of soap and water and then sprayed or rubbed gently with a small amount of bleach mixed into water. Allow the area to dry and then rinse again with soap and water; in extreme cases, you may have to rub gently with sandpaper or steel wool.

Ultimately, prevention is better than treatment when it comes to mildew and mold and keeping your home dry will help to minimize the chances of mildew forming.

When remodeling, there are an infinite amount of choices for just about every nuance of your home. When it comes to flooring though, there really is only one clear choice and that’s teak flooring. There are many reasons why people love having this wood in their homes, and it makes great flooring because of its long-lasting durability, low maintenance requirements, and naturally beautiful appearance.

Teak is used for many home furnishings, including chairs, tables, living room furniture, and of course, flooring. The reason for this wide range of uses is the fact that teak will last just about forever. Its own natural oils prevent pests and insects from inhabiting the wood as it acts as a repellent. It also acts as a natural weatherproofing that allows it to weather any storm, from muddy boots to spilled Kool-Aid.

This natural oil is also part of what makes it so low maintenance. Unlike other forms of wood, which may require staining, painting, sealing, or oiling, teak doesn’t need any of this. Teak oil acts as its own sealant. Really, the only thing you’ll have to do to your floors during its life is make sure they’re clean, and even that boils down to personal preference. Your floors will stand it longer than you can.

While you aren’t required to oil teak wood flooring, many people choose to do so because it really makes the natural colors of the teak pop out. One of the things that gives teak a lot of its character is its rings and color variations. This will appear naturally, but you can really bring these out using a teak oil. Teak tends to be very warm in color, almost a glowing golden yellow. You can use teak oil to adjust the levels of this natural color as well.

As far as flooring goes, teak wood flooring is some of the most expensive out there. When you factor in the fact that you’ll likely never have to replace it, and you won’t have to fuss with waxing, sealing or refinishing you’ll see that it easily pays for itself. Throw in its natural beauty, and it really puts teak over the top for choices for remodeling your floors.

If you need to heat a smaller space like a bathroom, bedroom, or smaller garage, kerosene and propane heaters aren’t an option. To avoid the safety concerns of these heaters in tight quarters, oil-filled “radiator” style electric heaters may be your best option.

Typically, oil heaters are constructed from a number of upright metal tubes filled with oil. The heating elements inside heat the oil within the unit, which in turn heats the surrounding air. Because they heat the air around them, oil heaters are usually considered convection heaters. As opposed to radiant heaters that need a “line-of-sight” to keep you warm, convection warms your room by heating the surrounding air. Oil heaters are therefore a great choice for rooms with lots of furniture or fixtures that may block warmth from radiant heaters.

One of the largest benefits of oil heaters is also a weakness, however. As they heat via convection, it can take several minutes to feel the heat in your room. With larger or more drafty rooms, this wait can feel like ages on a cold winter morning. However, using oil heaters in the right location makes them a very effective heating solution.

Due to their convection heating, the typical oil heater isn’t the most energy-efficient heater on the market. If you compare them to propane heaters, they have a higher cost per therm. When other heating options aren’t available, they are still a relatively efficient and inexpensive choice.

To help with their efficiency, most newer oil heaters use a built-in thermostat to regulate the heat produced. This thermostat helps to save energy that might be wasted heating an already warm room.

Generally, oil heaters are one of the safer heater styles on the market. Oil heaters, like most newer electric heaters, usually feature a safety sensor that will turn off the unit if it has been tipped over. The fire danger is also lessened as heating element is encased inside of the heater unit and thus cannot be touched directly. Regardless, be sure that you are following all recommendations from your heater’s manufacturer. Misuse can still cause dangerous conditions in the home.

One other thing to be aware of are oil heaters cool-down period. As the heating oil inside the heater holds heat very well, it can also take a bit of time to cool down. You could still accidentally burn yourself on a powered-down heater for several minutes after it has been turned off. Some units feature a built-in fan that both helps to cool the unit down faster as well as circulate heat in the room when the unit is warming.

So if you have a smaller space to heat but are low on cash, take a look at oil heaters. For a relatively low price, they can provide a steady, safe, and comfortable heat.

It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it—and get paid pretty well for doing it, too! If you’re a homeowner, chances are you have had to, or will have to, call a plumber for what you felt was an emergency plumbing repair. After you called and received an estimate, or had one come out and give you an estimate for that ‘emergency’ situation, you may have changed your tune about what constitutes an emergency.

Often, any problem which has to be taken care of right away is pulling a plumber away from a previously scheduled job, and if they have to give Mrs. Jones a discount because they could not finish her work on time, you may be making up the difference. If, however, you can hold off on services, you will have time to call around and get other estimates. Oftentimes, just waiting and scheduling the work for a bit later date will ensure that you get a slightly cheaper rate.

So, determining what is or is not an emergency is the key. First and foremost, is your emergency one which puts your health or your family’s health in danger? If so, obviously you have an emergency on your hands, and time is probably of the essence (especially if something is flooding!). It is pertinent to call several plumbers to find out if you can get an estimate over the phone. Another question you may need to ask in order to find out if you have an emergency or not is whether or not you can do without the room in question—is there only one bathroom in the house? If so, emergency! If not, perhaps you can schedule the work for a later date and save some money. Is it in the kitchen? If so, do you eat out often? If it is, maybe the work can wait.

Some plumbers will be honest enough to tell you that your plumbing problem is not an emergency, and whether or not the work can be delayed. All in all, it is important to get a second and third opinion if at all possible.

First impressions are important. The first thing you see when you look at a house is its siding. A homes exterior not only provides that first impression, but also plays an important part in protecting the home from all outside elements. The very first homes were built with wood from trees the builders cut down themselves. If you want your house to have that more traditional wooden appearance, there are several options for you that vary in price and maintenance requirements.

Clapboard siding is genuine wood siding that has a wonderful natural look and feel. Originally white pine, hemlock, spruce, and cypress were used for this type of siding, but nowadays cedar and redwood are more common because of their hardness and durability. This type of siding has long, horizontal planks of wood that are placed overlapping on the outside of a house. There are different types of wood and different shades for each, so there are varied looks you can achieve. Most look so beautiful that a clear sealer can be used. Being wood, it can also be painted or stained. The downfalls for clapboard siding are that it tends to be expensive and it does require maintenance to make sure water does not seep into the home and that the beauty is maintained.

An alternative to actual wood siding is T 111 siding. This product became more popular in the 70′s and 80′s as a cheaper version of the real thing. It is basically wood products and other materials pressed together to make a T 111 plywood siding. It provides a look of wood without the expense. It tends to be faster and easier to install than its wooden counterparts also. Just like clapboard siding, though, it requires considerable maintenance through the years. It also is not as durable and strong as real wood, allowing more dents and scrapes resulting from the outside elements. The paint or sealant you put on it will be the only protection it has. T 1 11 siding is much more commonly found on sheds these days, where it performs much better and can be maintained more easily.

A lower maintenance wood siding option is shingle siding. This is almost always made from cedar and stained to keep the wooden look. Shingle siding also has the versatility of being able to look traditional or modern. It involves smaller pieces of wood, making it easier to install, and also providing the option of different shaping. You can find the pieces shaped like half circles, diamonds, arrows, and fish scales, just to name a few. So shingle siding offers more flexibility with making a design statement with your home’s exterior. The downfalls for shingle siding are that it is still wood and requires steady maintenance, and although it can be fairly inexpensive, it still costs more than aluminum or vinyl siding.

Nothing can compare to the beauty of wood. Even with its need for maintenance and its higher pricing, it continues to be one of the most popular choices for home siding. If well installed and taken care of, there is no doubt that any of these sidings will make a great first impression for a home.

It is important to recognise the value addition that shelving can bring to your room or office. The use of the glass shelf would invariably go a long way to enhance the look and feel of the room even though this would depend on a number of factors. These are used in a number of situations thereby making them ever-present. They are used very much in television stands especially the black glass which perfectly matches the plasma and LCD screens. When they are used in conjunction with other materials like wood they produce a very striking effect.

Glass shelves are very suitable for those bathrooms that are often smaller than the other rooms. For this reason they do not need to display bulky or heavy items. In addition the tinted glass can work very well with the bathroom colour schemes which on some occasions are green or blue hues. Moreover, it would be very good if these shelves are used with mirrors behind them in order to reflect the light and objects further from them. They can be very dramatic during the night if they are used in conjunction with spot lighting especially the mirrored glass shelves.

There is the need to consider the effect you want to achieve and the existing furniture of the room when buying glass shelves. For a cosy decor, the rustic and traditional shelves may be a touch too modern and it would be better to use wood. With this in mind, it would be good to good to note that the glass is suitable for a range of styles and interior decor. This can indeed complement different kinds of designs including any kind or range of style.

Furthermore you would have to take a look at the kind of things you want to display on the glass shelf. In instances where the shelves would be carrying heavy items like big books, you would have to go in for another kind of shelf as the glass cannot bear the weight. However this also depends on the fixings and brackets you use including the other kinds of accessories. It is important to note that glass is very fragile. Therefore in order to have your safety intact you can choose to go in for a more robust material if the items are quite heavy for the glass to bear.

Before purchasing any executive writing desk, you’ll want to decide on the decor and ambience of the room in which it will be the centerpiece. The style and the design may well influence the efficient use of an executive’s time. An executive writing desk creates not only efficiency but an image that is carried out in all the work accomplished from this center of operations.

This large and elegant piece of furniture will dominate any space it occupies. It creates a feeling that can be warm and welcoming, powerful and important or one of quiet strength and durability. Many of these are a two-pedestal style with intricate wood inlays. These are often 72 inches wide and create an impressive display of competency and command. Various styles include antique appearances, traditional with impressive wood or wood veneer, modern with simple lines or a futuristic design startling in chrome and tinted glass. The style chosen sets the tone for the quality of work that is produced; lawyers and bankers look dignified behind an antique or traditional desk, stock brokers prefer the sleek, clean lines of the modern creations and architects of tomorrow’s designs often choose a futuristic style. Matching accessories like pen and pencil sets, desk pads, bookcases or lateral files complete the executive look and feel of the space.

The standard design for an executive writing desk is a large legal/letter filing drawer and the box drawer on each side with a center pencil drawer in the middle. Locks are standard features to protect the confidential information held inside. The center drawer often offers a flip-down face allowing easy access to a keyboard. Some are equipped with a functional lift-out pencil tray. A built-in power hub or opening provides easy access for an AC outlet, USB and voice/data port cords. Features like English dovetail construction, quality finishing, easy rolling ball bearing drawer slides and soundless operation of the drawers add to the professional image projected. Other options are available and will fit the specialized needs of any user.

The image portrayed by an executive writing desk proves the validity of customer and clients expectations. The best part of creating this image is that the user automatically rises to the status required for this elegant desk and room that it occupies.

When shopping for leather furniture, it is important to realize there are many different types of leather, all at differing price points, but no matter your budget, there is a type of leather for you. Leather furniture comes in many grades of leather, each at different prices.

Full grain leather is the most expensive, and you can have it made into a couch, a leather chair, an ottoman or a leather settee. Full grain is very soft and needs a lot of upkeep. It is not quite as durable as other grains of leather, so when you spend the extra money on this, be prepared to use caution when utilizing the furniture, and know how to care for it before you leave the showroom.

The next class of leather is top grain, followed by split grain and then bonded leather. The most popular leather used in furniture is top grain. Often people prefer its look to the look of full grain, as it has a more uniform cast to it. Also, top grain is more durable, so you get a leather that last longer.

Split grain is the most affordable and most widely purchased, solely for this reason. It is as durable as top grain, so most people save a little money and go with split grain. Normally this is what you will find in furniture stores. An affordable leather chair, a reasonably priced leather sofa, these will usually be made of split grain. Often, smaller furniture stores, or higher end retailers, will offer an upgrade option, but mass furniture retailers tend to stick to split grain leather furniture only.

Finally, bonded leather is the ‘leftovers’. It is not used in furniture, or rarely so, as it is piecemeal. All the leftover pieces of leather are bonded together to make this type of leather.

When shopping for new leather furniture, it is important to know what kind of leather you want and can afford. It is also important to know what kind you are looking for, so you are not disappointed when you get the pieces home.

You may have to install some glass shower doors to your bathroom if you want to add some touch of modern elegance. In addition it would be very much suitable if you cannot afford a total remodel. What would happen is that there would be a total change of your bathroom decor. These are doors which are very durable, semi-transparent, and heavy and need diligent cleaning. It is important however to note some few things before ever buying any of these.

One of things you have to note is that glass shower doors are heavy. You would have to take this into consideration especially if you decide to install them yourself. There would be the need for professional assistance to reinstall it if it should pop off the track. In order to solve this problem, you would have to change the normal glass and replace it with plexi-glass which is a clear plastic. You have to recognise that this kind of glass is lighter and is also completely break proof. Another thing you have to note is that the glass shower doors require a lot of cleaning. This is because they are a lifetime investment.

Furthermore the glass shower doors are also transparent which means that you can see through it. For those who even decide to select a heavily clouded model these would definitely not be opaque. If this level of privacy does not go down well with your standard of living, then this kind of door would not be the right choice for you. In addition, you can choose to get an after shower cleaning spray and use it after each wash. What this does is to ensure that the everyday soap scum stains are kept down.

There is the need to recognise that if you want a clear glass shower door, then each and every single water droplet would be very much seen. Indeed it would be a time consuming job for you to be keeping the door clean with a streak-free finish. For those whose doors come with a pattern to it, this kind of duty is lessened. However this even would need scrubbing for a minimum of once every two months. This should be done with the use of an acidic solution that is mild like that of vinegar or lemon juice. This would surely break up hard water and soap stains.

Custom Home Kitchens

Some husbands groan when their wives say, “Honey, let’s redo the kitchen”. To men this can translate into, “Oh no, we are going to have to eat out for the next three months until she gets this room the way she wants it.”

Custom Home Builders

A general contractor might focus on new cabinets and new flooring, hang a few lights and we’re done. Not so when the lady of the house has her way. I know contractors who prefer to do cement work in July than deal with some of these ladies who have lots of time and lots of ideas that are not thought out. Anyway, women like to not only look at the cabinets, but they have to see all the features, sizes, handle choices, and options that each kind has in the entire show room. A lady also can be found browsing though bolts of material searching for just the right selection of fabric to match the wood sample in her hand. It is the very best to put the time and effort into a kitchen to make it the way YOU want it, but the lady in charge of the project should also listen carefully to the custom home builder. He has experience that might just tell you something you didn’t already know.

A Kitchen Story

For instance one lady spent $55,000 redoing her kitchen. She had an architect and an interior decorator to help her. With lots of planning the trio moved the entire kitchen around, redesigned it, chose cabinets, flooring, fixtures, appliances, paint, and everything down to the last detail. When the contractor began the trio of ladies insisted that the countertop should be three inches shorter than the standard height because the owner was only five feet tall. The contractor said he could do it, but did the home owner plan to resell the home any time soon. The lady of the home nodded and said yes, she did plan to move in five or six years when her husband retired. The general contractor told her that for resale the countertop should probably be made the standard height since not everyone is short. The architect, home owner, and interior decorator all thought his idea was not good. The lady of the home should have her kitchen the way she wanted it, and that was that. The trio of ladies also insisted on the inclusion of a pressed tin backsplash. Well the kitchen was finished along with major renovations throughout the home.

Custom Home For Sale

Six years later the home was listed for sale. After several months of many showings and a few repeat showings the home sat unsold. The homeowners were very upset and asked the realtor why people were not purchasing their home. The realtor told them that two different people had been very interested but the kitchen was the problem. Surprised, the lady of the home asked what could possibly be wrong with her $55,000 kitchen- that was one of the highlights of the entire home! The realtor agreed and said, “It is a lovely kitchen but the countertops must have been installed by a contractor who didn’t know very much. All the tops are shorter than the standard height and this is not an easily corrected problem.” So the contractors might have good ideas after all!
