Just about everyone who has a garden or their own backyard, would love to having it looking lush, green and generally pleasing to the eye. I have sometimes driven through neighborhoods, where the lawns are so green and well kept, that I experience a tinge of jealousy. My lawn tends to look dry, or patchy with green here and there. When I’ve managed to get it looking green consistently, I have not been able to maintain that look for long. However, I recently learnt of a couple ways to improve this situation, and they seem to be working.

The first way is to aerate the lawn. Due to the fact that the lawn tends to get used often, whether by frequent walks, or children playing on it, or even the regular mowing, the soil tends to get really compacted. This in turn causes water drainage issues, and negatively impacts the absoption of nutrients in the soil. Therefore, the health of the grass which grows, will suffer. This is why aerating the lawn will help. To do this, you can get one of the aerating tools which are made for this. Essentially, you just need something that can make approximately 3 inch deep holes in the lawn soil.

The second way to improve your lawn is to water it smartly. There are more effective ways of watering the lawn than others. For example, watering often is not necessarily a good thing. The recommended way of doing it, is to give about an inch of water maybe once a week. This will result in the roots of the grass growing deeper, which will allow the grass to stay greener for longer dry periods. If your lawn is big, then you will likely want to use a sprinkler to do the job. You can estimate how much water you’re applying by placing some containers around the lawn and measuring the amount in each. When the average is an inch, then you know that your sprinkler has done the job. If your sprinkler is not able to cover the entire area of grass then you might need to utilize a garden hose to complete the job. Also, if you do not have sprinklers, you can use the hose to achieve the same result. If you’re using a hose, you might want to consider investing in a garden hose holder. Garden hose holders are convenient for hose storage, and they come in a variety of forms, shapes, styles, which can really add to the decor of your garden.

There are of course many ways to improve the beauty of one’s yard and it is hoped that you will always look for new ways and ideas to realize this end. If your issue concerns mainly your lawn, then perhaps the tips included in this article will prove useful, as they have been to me.

The cultivation of bonsai trees is actually a Japanese art but derived from the Chinese culture, in which ancient literature we can find reference of miniature landscaping works performed since a thousand of years back. Today almost anyone can grow a Chinese Bonsai with little effort but a pile of patience besides a few simple techniques you must keep in mind if you are about to re-pot your tree.

Whether your bonsai is already a small tree, a plant or shrub, make sure to find the right sized pot for it, if not a depthless tray to develop a miniature landscape. Start preparing the container by soaking it slightly heated water and leave it overnight.

Before planting your Chinese bonsai tree, let the pot dries but leaving some moisture so it cannot absorb it from the soil, impacting adversely the tree growing process. Some bonsai experts say clay pots are better for this purpose than ceramic or porcelain containers. Plastic recipients, on the other hand, are not recommended.

Remember, what makes a bonsai different is its structure, hence get a thick wire to bend the tree’s end making two loops bigger than the draining orifices to prevent wire pass through. However, test if wire runs through snug and nicely, pulling on the first orifice.

Get some plastic guards to cover your Chinese bonsai drainage holes, interlocking the wire to secure the guards and working with it from the bottom to top, binding the caps to each hole. The plastic guards are meant to prevent soil leakages that often cover the tray with a nasty eroding effect.

The process of wiring and tying the plastic meshes is not complicated or time consuming as long as your chosen pot has only a single drainage orifice. Depending on the size of the pot and its number of holes, threading another wire that holds the tree root is always advisable to add stability while working with its structure.

Re-potting a Chines bonsai tree is not that hard as it could seem, and most of the work falls into preparing adequately the tray and pot, ensuring the plastic guards will be kept in place through the time. The extra effort you put into this job guarantees your bonsai will keep the soil and humidity it needs for its developing.

Determining the location of your vegetable plants is a very pertinent step to planting your garden, and possibly one of the first steps you want to make. Your location and can be impacted by many factors. If you have a large backyard, you will likely have a pick of many locations for your vegetable plant garden. Those with small backyards can always consider container gardening as well. Container gardening has become very popular, especially for those living in apartments or other locations with limited space.

You will want the location of your vegetable garden to be in a sunny spot. The location should get a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight for maximum growing potential. Certain vegetables do not require quite as much sunlight, including leafy vegetables, like spinach. These vegetables can be planted in a slightly shady area. Research the sunlight conditions of the vegetables you plan on planting when deciding on your vegetable plant location.

Another important factor in determining the location of your vegetable plant garden is ensuring that the garden is not too close to trees or other shrubbery. The roots of the trees in tribes can steal important nutrients from your plants.

You also want a location with fertile soil. If your soil is clay or sandy texture, you may need to add organic matter and fertilizer to your soil. Many local nurseries and test the fertility of your soil if you bring them a sample.

The vegetable plant locations should have proper drainage. Many people choose raised bed gardens for this reason. Ensure there is a water source near your vegetable garden. Depending on the choices you make for planting vegetables, each row or bed should have approximately 12 to 18 inches between them. You at least need enough space to maneuver through out the rows.

Are you tired of having droopy indoor plants and flowers that aren’t producing the results that you have been wanting? Are your fruits and vegetables coming out small and underdeveloped? Are you plant stalks long and lanky and not able to support your plants braches? If you have any of these problems that are common to indoor plant gardening then this article may help you find a solution to your problems.

The first most common cause of poor plants is lighting. Improper lighting can cause your plants to yield poor crops or even worse be burnt and wither away. One of the safest ways to insure that you are getting the proper amount of light is to use LED growing lights. These type of grow lights are a sure way to make sure that you are getting both the blue and red ends of the light spectrum for both good root and stalk structure as well as high yields when it comes harvest time. Indoor LED grow lights also is a great way to get the most out of your artificial lighting setup as they produce very little heat so you are able to set the lights very close to your plants.

The next most common thing that causes indoor gardening failure is poor fertilization. Often times people tend to over fertilize or greatly under fertilize or fertilize too much in the wrong stage of plant growth. As a general tip it is best to stick with triple ten fertilizers when planting and during normal growth stages. The only time that I would recommend going off of this type is just before the plants begin to bloom as the added nutrients of heavy fertilization will yield you higher crops. As far as how much fertilizer to use, use only as much that will fit in the palm of your hand per plant. The best way to introduce the fertilizer is over a weeks span but if you must do it all at once then mix it in with the soil as best you can and give a very light watering to start the mixing process.

When gardeners start thinking about garden urns they almost never come up short for ideas on how to use them. In fact, given the apparently endless array of options, choosing what to do with them is sometimes the hardest part of working with garden vases and containers!

Let’s say that you’ve exhausted the traditional uses. You have used urns as containers for crawling ivy and bursts of violet. You have used some tall containers to house sunflowers or even cattails. You’ve got some decorative urns here and there that do nothing but enhance the garden’s aesthetic. Now what?

Consider planting a potted fruit tree or two. The benefits are many – they are often beautiful to look at, and of course there is the lovely fruit that they offer in time. We’re talking – depending on your climate – about bright yellow lemons or sweet succulent apples, even the deep cool purple of plums. Is there anything better than a fruit salad made from your own fruit trees? Or your very own apple pie for desert?

If you like the idea, potted fruit trees are actually not as intimidating as they might appear. You want to keep a few important tips in mind. First, be sure that the urn you select is large enough for the tree’s root ball. A smaller urn might work fine when the tree is in the early stages but it won’t work in the long run. You don’t want your tree busting the clay pot it’s in – that’s bad for the urn and the tree!

The root ball – fancy term for the roots that expand under the soil – will be approximately the same size as the tree branches. Use them to eyeball the size urn you are going to need. Remember, there are many dwarf tree varieties that will do just fine in a container.

Remember as well that trees are heavier than most of the plants or shrubs that you might grown. And, trees grow higher than most plants. This weight distribution means that they can easily topple over if you choose the wrong size or shape of urn. Look for a vase with sturdy sides.

Fruit trees like soil that’s laden with nutrients so don’t skimp on the compost and other healthy additives. Water your trees on a regular basis – they need this kind of attention even more than flowers do, because trees get awfully thirsty. The love and attention that you shower on them in the early stages of their lives will pay off big time as they mature. Keep your eyes on the prize – that fresh fruit salad or the steaming cherry pie!

When your lawn has brown spots or bare spots, testing the soil of your lawn can help pinpoint missing nutrients or inappropriate ph levels. This information is used to correct the soil and bring your green lawn back.

To test your soil, there is a variety of lawn testing kits. These will measure ph levels, nitrogen levels, and determine if other important nutrient levels are adequate. Lawn soil test kits also measure potassium and phosphorus levels.

To collect test samples of your lawn, use a garden trowel or a large spoon, but not your hands. Oils and dirt on your bare hands can contaminate the sample.

Gather the sample from three inches below the surface. Take several samples from various areas around the lawn. It is best to take samples from the different problem areas, as well as from the healthy grass areas. Place these samples in separate, clear containers with labels.

The sample will then need to settle in water before you can test it. Follow the instructions on your home test kit, and you will be surprised at the accuracy of the results.

Testing lawn soil is going to yield various results, but here is why they are important:

Ph levels: Finding out if the ph level is too high or too low in the soil is easily corrected. It is important because a ph slightly off what it should be will not allow the grass to grow.

Nitrogen: This is the nutrient your soil must have to feed your lawn. Low nitrogen means less healthy grass, which is more vulnerable to disease and pests.

Phosphorus: This chemical stimulates the roots to grow, and is an excellent choice when sodding your lawn.

Potassium: Another important nutrient for helping roots mature early. Especially important for grass grown from seed.

Testing your soil will help you enjoy a healthy, green lawn for years.

There are several contaminants in the soil that do not go away for a very long time and pose a health risk to human beings. This has driven researchers to look for alternative ways to grow crops other than using the already polluted soil as a medium. Hydroponic Gardening is one such technique where plants do not make use of soil to grow and instead have alternative mediums while hydroponic nutrients are administered to them.

Research has shown that soil just acts as a storage medium for the plant’s nutrients. If the plant would get its nutrients and water from other sources other than soil, it would still survive. Since adding water in the soil dissolves the nutrients and make them easily absorbable by the plants, hydroponics seeks to do away with the need for soil in many plants while attempting to make them even better and more nutritious.

Plants found in the soil can actually live and thrive without soil for as long as they get the necessary hydroponic nutrients and water. Some of the most common alternatives for soil that hydroponics has proven effective include, but not limited to, mineral wool blocks, vermiculite and gravel among others. These mediums perform the same function as soil, that is, providing suspension for the roots of the plants to grow in and enhance their stability.

The hydroponic nutrient solutions that satisfy the plant’s nutritional requirement are the most important factors to consider. For as long as the correct hydroponic nutrients are supplied to them, many plants can grow without soil. The hydroponic nutrients are tailored to meet the requirements of a flourishing plant and administered in measured quantities. Since not all plants can hold water in their roots continuously, some hydroponic nutrient solutions are administered in doses.

Hydroponic gardening comes with an array of advantages, one of which includes cleaner farming. There are also reduced chances of soil borne diseases that mainly affect plants and destroy farm produce. Hydroponics makes it possible to grow crops in areas with unfavorable soil conditions like deserts and rocky areas. Greenhouses can also be introduced to produce better quality crops without using soil which is polluted.

One of the more popular space saving methods for home gardening is vertical gardening. This is simply designing your garden so that many of the plants that would otherwise grow horizontally are able to grow vertically. Not only can it free up space in your garden, but it can actually allow you to plant a different spread of vegetables than you otherwise could.

Garden netting has been used for various uses in the garden, ranging from shading and protection to growth and vertical gardening applications. Trellis netting is typically designed in a wide grid and helps to provide a platform for the plant to anchor vertically.

Although there are a number of different ways to implement this sort of gardening technique into you own personal garden, the cost different between methods can be considerable. The only real difference in terms of the trellis is going to be aesthetic. As long as the structure is sufficiently strong to hold the weight of the plant and the basic structure for the plant to grasp onto is in place, plant growth will have little variance.

Using trellis netting for garden plantings is also an excellent way to conserve space. The ground coverage of plants such as melons, squash, and pumpkins can be considerable. Most people do not realize that plants of this nature can generally be grown vertically rather than horizontally. Because of the size of the fruit, most people fear that the trellis structure or even the plant will be unable to hold the weight. This is surprisingly not the case. You will find that as long as your trellis framework is sufficiently strong to support the weight, the plant will also be able to handle it.

Vertical gardening with trellis netting can open up an entire new range of possibilities for rooftop gardens or small yards. This can lead to a wider variety of vegetables in your garden and a more successful harvest.

In the last few years, survival seeds have been marketed to the masses. Radio show host like Glenn Beck have been pushing these packets and most of the manufacturers of these so called “survival seeds” have been playing off the fears of consumers due to the current economic climate.

But do these seed packs really give consumers a valuable product or are they just over priced, over hyped garden seeds that anyone can buy their self and store.

Well, as you probably guessed, most of the seeds in these packs are your ordinary run of the mill garden seed. Some are open pollinated seeds, better known as heirloom seeds, while others are just whatever seeds the people could buy the cheapest in bulk and resell.

And many of the so called storage vaults these so called survival seeds come in are nothing more than PVC pipe and many are poorly sealed. This will leave you with around $150 or worthless seeds should you ever try and bury the pipe!

If you really want to store you own seeds, then learn how to properly save them yourself. In fact, one of the most popular ways people save seeds is to buy them at huge discounts whenever the big retail stores have them on sale at the end of the season. Then all you do is place them in a waterproof container, preferably one that is durable and will not break, then put the container back and wait for the end of the world as we know it!

There are other ways as well. Amazon has many books on how to grow a garden, harvest the fruit and save the seeds for planting in the future. It’s really simple and you won’t have to spend a bunch of money on some so called survival seeds.
