If you are interested in installing a skylight, which many people are opting for these days as a way to add more natural lighting to their living areas, home offices and bedrooms, you will probably also be looking into skylight blinds.

skylight blindsThere are several popular styles of skylight blinds these days. Honeycomb blinds are becoming increasingly more popular to hang in skylights, mainly because they offer great insulation and thus are very energy saving. This is particularly useful in cooler climates.  You can leave your skylight blind up during the daytime, if there is sunlight, and receive additional solar heat in your room. Then at night, if you close your honeycomb blinds you will find that they really do help keep a lot of the heat in.

Roller blinds are perhaps the easiest skylight blind to both install and to operate.  They need to be installed on tracks, to enable them to open and close smoothly and with little effort, but they are quite suited to this type of window. They are also a great choice if you are looking for a blackout blind to add to your skylight, or if you want to add on additional UV protection, as these are both very common options available with roller blinds.

Venetian blinds are another fairly popular choice. They work well and it is easy to regulate the light coming into the room by closing or opening the shutters to different degrees. They are not as easy as the other type of blinds to install, and they are more difficult to trim to size should you need to do so.

Pleated blinds used to be a popular choice, however with the many other choices of blinds and shutters available these days, fewer people are opting to install them in their skylights. Common problems are that they fade quickly when exposed to bright sunlight and they are also very difficult to keep clean and dust free. Whenever you need to clean them you have to take them down from the window. To the contrary, other modern blinds are much simpler to clean and many can be simply brushed off or dusted with a duster or soft broom.

Remote controlled skylight blinds are a popular choice for many, as nothing beats being able to sit back in an armchair and relax, while opening and closing your skylight blinds. Of course the downside to this is that remotes often go missing for days at a time, at least they do in my household (I blame it on the kids, of course!)  And sometimes they stop working and need to be replaced. If you do not mind the occasional misplaced remote, and the resultant panic when no one can find it, or if you do not have children and teenagers in your home, then this is a good choice especially when it comes to comfort and ease.  I personally do not mind using a skylight blind opening pole though, as it is a great deal harder to misplace, for one thing, and it really does not take that much effort to open and close the blinds!
