Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to cost a fortune. A small bathroom remodel particularly can be very cost effective. Even if you want to use expensive materials such as marble and travertine – if the area is small enough you will be able to use short ends of materials which others can’t. I once got a bathroom bench for a third of its retail price because it was shorter than the standard length sold!
Think smart too – if you love a particular tile but its very expensive, say a glass mosaic style tile, use it as a narrow strip as a feature in the shower cubicle rather than using it all throughout the shower recess.
For major appliance which are hard to replace such as the WC, vanity and spa bath then you do need to spend the money. But some items such as vanity cabinets, shelving, a faucets can be easily upgraded when the budget allows – compromise the details now – so you don’t have to defer the entire bathroom upgrade.
Adding a skylight will cost more – but if the main problem is lack of light – then a skylight will be well worth it in terms of the value added to the bathroom. Some modern halogen lights can make a huge difference too.
If money is particularly tight then one of the best and cheapest ways to spruce up a bathroom is a new lights and a new coat of paint. Even just a heater and a heated towel rail and some new fluffy towels will make an older, rather cold bathroom that much more welcoming over winter. Replace the old moldy shower curtain with a new one – or with a glass panel if the design allows – you’ll be surprised just how much larger it will make a small room look.
