Upgrading a home’s door knobs is an easy way to make a big difference in it’s feel and appearance, but homes have a lot of doors which makes the price of this project go way up. My house isn’t that big, but I have 9 doors, which took me almost $300 to change all of them! If I knew then what I do know, I could have saved myself a lot of money, but I didn’t! I want to share what I learned from shopping for door knobs and how to save money on them.
One area where to don’t want to cut corners is the front door. Safety comes first here, so if you do spend extra on one door, make it this one. Most homes have lame door knobs from when they’re built, so most any changes will be an improvement. Just make sure that you door knobs match the deadbolt and you’re all good. Brass door knobs are very common for front doors, and will always be in style.
For the interior your taste and style will determine what you choose. Antique crystal door knobs are very hot right now, and really easy to save money on. Browsing through your newspaper’s classified section should turn up some salvage sales. These are sales of all of the stuff that came from a house that is either being remodeled or torn down. Finding crystal door knobs here is a breeze, and you can usually get them for a dollar or two.
Used door knobs are always going to cost less than brand new ones. If you do want new ones, put it off until your local hardware store is having a big sale, or your favorite online store is offering free shipping. When doorknobs go on sale they usually get a deep discount so you stand to save a lot of cash.
Upgrading door knobs doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Shop smart and wait for sales and you’ll have no problem at all getting this job done without busting the budget.
