Custom Home Kitchens

Some husbands groan when their wives say, “Honey, let’s redo the kitchen”. To men this can translate into, “Oh no, we are going to have to eat out for the next three months until she gets this room the way she wants it.”

Custom Home Builders

A general contractor might focus on new cabinets and new flooring, hang a few lights and we’re done. Not so when the lady of the house has her way. I know contractors who prefer to do cement work in July than deal with some of these ladies who have lots of time and lots of ideas that are not thought out. Anyway, women like to not only look at the cabinets, but they have to see all the features, sizes, handle choices, and options that each kind has in the entire show room. A lady also can be found browsing though bolts of material searching for just the right selection of fabric to match the wood sample in her hand. It is the very best to put the time and effort into a kitchen to make it the way YOU want it, but the lady in charge of the project should also listen carefully to the custom home builder. He has experience that might just tell you something you didn’t already know.

A Kitchen Story

For instance one lady spent $55,000 redoing her kitchen. She had an architect and an interior decorator to help her. With lots of planning the trio moved the entire kitchen around, redesigned it, chose cabinets, flooring, fixtures, appliances, paint, and everything down to the last detail. When the contractor began the trio of ladies insisted that the countertop should be three inches shorter than the standard height because the owner was only five feet tall. The contractor said he could do it, but did the home owner plan to resell the home any time soon. The lady of the home nodded and said yes, she did plan to move in five or six years when her husband retired. The general contractor told her that for resale the countertop should probably be made the standard height since not everyone is short. The architect, home owner, and interior decorator all thought his idea was not good. The lady of the home should have her kitchen the way she wanted it, and that was that. The trio of ladies also insisted on the inclusion of a pressed tin backsplash. Well the kitchen was finished along with major renovations throughout the home.

Custom Home For Sale

Six years later the home was listed for sale. After several months of many showings and a few repeat showings the home sat unsold. The homeowners were very upset and asked the realtor why people were not purchasing their home. The realtor told them that two different people had been very interested but the kitchen was the problem. Surprised, the lady of the home asked what could possibly be wrong with her $55,000 kitchen- that was one of the highlights of the entire home! The realtor agreed and said, “It is a lovely kitchen but the countertops must have been installed by a contractor who didn’t know very much. All the tops are shorter than the standard height and this is not an easily corrected problem.” So the contractors might have good ideas after all!
