Closed circuit television has helped a lot in crime prevention and surveillance for personal and commercial use. CCTV is a television system using video cameras wherein the signals are transmitted back to a recording device. CCTV cameras have been built originally in the 1940s for rocket launching observations. It was only in the 1990s that using CCTV cameras have spread worldwide. They are mainly used for traffic monitoring in highly urbanized areas and crime prevention.

CCTV camera kits come in various packages, which are suited to different needs. There are cheap systems available in the market for basic monitoring. A higher quality kit come with a higher price and includes additional features like motion-detectors and email alerts. When purchasing a CCTV camera kit, keep in mind that it is a long-term investment. Thus, one should identify the purpose of acquiring the kit in order to get the best deal possible. Some reasons are to prevent theft, break-ins, vandalisms, espionage, and monitoring – knowing in advance what function you need a securtity system for will help you not ot overspend.

The following are some types of CCTV camera kit:

Black and White cameras:  These are the most affordable of all types. They work best in areas where the lighting is low to achieve better resolution.

Colour cameras: These types requires a higher lighting resolution, and the color recording affords more clarity to the images.

Covert cameras: These are small and very portable. This kind of camera kit is commonly disguised as other common household items – For example, they can be made to look like an overhead fire extinguisher, or a smoke detector.

Day/Night cameras:  This kit is a combination of the colour and black and white cameras. Depending on the light level, this camera can change to infra-red mode to see at night.

Night vision cameras: These cameras are built with their own light source in a form that is not seen by the naked eye.

Outdoor cameras: The outer bodies of these cameras are designed to be waterproof and fight weathering.

Speed dome cameras: These cameras can pan, tilt and zoom their focus. A remote control manages its focal points.

Vandal proof cameras: Like the outdoor type, these cameras are built with hardened cases that can resist physical abuse.

In all these systems, the main output of the camera system can be viewed on a standard TV or VGA  monitor.

CCTV camera kits are available for home and commercial use. Many property theft crimes could have been prevented if a home security system had been deployed. In todays climate, where crime appears to be on the increase, shouldn’t you have one for your property?
